  • Description

Film just received from Dakar shows the modern city port and capital of Senegal on Aug 20 as the break-up took place of the Mali Federation - newly independent within the French Community - into its two constituent parts, Senegal and the former French Sudan.

There had been talk of secession in Senegal when Federal Premier Keita, from Sudan, defied an earlier agreement in announcing he would run against Senegal's Leopold Senghor for President in the Aug 27 election, and would remain Premier if he won. The split finally came when Keita dismissed Senegal Premier Mamadou Dia from the Federal post of Defence Minister.

Senegal's Cabinet immediately held an emergency meeting and Aug 20 announced its secession. Dia was given full powers for 3 months. Dia, together with Senghor, heads the Senegal Progressive Union (UPS) party.

Keita was placed under house arrest in Dakar, but later was sent back to Sudan, bigger but poorer of the two formerly federated countries. President de Gaulle quickly cabled the two opposed Premiers, asking them to come and see him.

Dia has already been to Paris, and France is waiting to see whether or not Sudan will swing away from the French Community towards some kind of union with neighbouring independent Guinea.
