Background: First Division English League Soccer team Derby County had their fourth consecutive win on Saturday (9 December) when they easily defeated Conventry City at Derby.
The scores were Derby two, Conventry nil.
Conventry's defeat was only their second in ten games.
Neither team could gain the initiative in the early stages of the game, but the excitement was high with some exceptional defence play.
Conventry goalkeeper Neil Ramsbottom made a series of exceptional saves as Derby striker Kevin Hector Kept up the pressure.
The save of the match came in the 40th minute, when Derby's Colin Boulton tipped a fast ball from Wilf Smith over the bar.
Boulton, supported by the hard-working Willie Car, was too strong for the Conventry attack.
The first score came up in the 55th minute, after a disputed penalty. John O'Hare, playing in midfield, was brought down inside the penalty box. Ramsbottom was beaten by Alan Hinton's well-aimed shot for the net.
Conventry failed to recover and in the 70th minute. Archie Gemmill added Derby's second tail when his shot from the wing slipped past Ramsbottom near the post.
Derby's Ron Webster and Coventry's Mick Coop were booked by the referee for fouls.
SYNOPSIS: A spectacular match in the English League First Division Soccer, at Derby, with Coventry, in the dark stripe shirts, attacking from left to right. It was a battle of the goalkeepers for much of the early play, with Derby's Colin Boulton making the save the day.
Conventry kick of to start the second half. Their first half had been uninspiring, apart from a series of exceptional saves by goalkeeper Neil Ramsbottom. He was continually pressed by Derby striker Kevin Hector.
With Derby in possession, it was only the skill of Ramsbottom who kept them out once more.
Then a nasty incident after just over fifty minutes of play. John O'Hare, playing in an unfamiliar midfield position, was brought down inside the penalty box.
Alan Hinton takes the penalty kick...and is too good for Ramsbottom.
With time running out, Conventry had little chance to recover, and their fate was sealed in the seventieth minute when Archie Gemmill added Derby's second goal. For Derby, it was the fourth consecutive win, and for Conventry, only the second defeat in ten games.
