Soccer-and France and Iran, two World Cup final qualifiers, played each other in an international friendly in Toulouse, France, on Thursday (11 May). France eventually won the match two-one, by virtue of a disputed goal in the 69th minute, scored by Didier Six.

SYNOPSIS: Before the match, strict security measures were taken against a group of left-wing demonstrators protesting alleged human rights violations in Iran, and in Argentina, where the World Cup matches are to be played. The police arrested at least 20 people who were later released after the match.

A crowd of 35,000 watched Iran, in the light shirts, kick-off on a pitch that had been vandalised with weed killer. France immediately showed their superiority in midfield and went into attack.

From the start the Iranians found themselves under heavy pressure. And France scored in the 14th minute when Dominique Rocheteau's cross was headed in by Albert Gemmrich, from close range.

Iran, who play in group four in Argentina with Holland, Peru and Scotland-showed some lively running up front. They were unlucky not to draw level with this chance just before half-time.

Immediately after the interval, Iran came back into the game. Following a mistake by a French player after the kick-off, Hassan Rowshan intercepted the ball and fired it low between the posts to equalise. Much to the delight of his overjoyed team-mates.

The score remained at one-all until 20 minutes from the end when the French scored the disputed winner. Didier Six got the final touch, but the Iranians claimed the whistle had already been blown for an infringement. In spite of strong protests from the Iranian goal-keeper, the goal counted and France won the match.
