The male chauvanist champion of tennis, 56-year-old Bobby riggs, took on members of a football team ... and visit to melbourne, Australia, on Saturday (4 January).
Riggs began the marathon match, playing 13 husky Victorian Football League players .. simultaneously. He managed to defeat them 4-3 and was carried off the court, shoulder-high by the vanquished footballers.
Then Riggs entered the court, facing Mrs. Susan Peacock, wife of the Liberal Opposition spokesman on foreign affairs. Mrs. Peacock, an interviewer on a television current affairs programme, was the only person who responded to Riggs' challenge to Australian women tennis players.
Previously, Riggs had challenged Margaret Court and Billy Jean King ... but against Mrs. Peacock, he played with a number of handicaps. Firstly, he had six wine casks placed at his end of the court ... and then to add to the distraction, three chairs, two occupied by beautiful young girls, appeared. And as a final bizarre touch, Riggs sported a sun umbrella, an airline bag and flippers.
The umpire Hugh Stewart awarded Mrs. Peacock two points to every one scored by Riggs. And the final outcome was a three-all draw.
