  • Description

The Indonesian dry season ended with a vengeance just as President Sukarno arrived to open a new hospital for crippled children in Kebajoran, a suburb of Djakarta.

Guest were almost begged down in mud as in they arrived to see what had been achieved by the voluntary workers who had raised the money to start this much needed social service. Indonesia has no real tradition of this type of voluntary work.

Seventy children receive treatment at the hospital which will be expanded as funds permit. As yet there is insufficient money to install electricity or, even, provide mosquito nets.

These ARE, however, schoolrooms, dormitories, clinics and exercise rooms and an operating theatre (fully equipped), paddling pool and recreational areas.

Previously the children were treated in a private house. There is a great shortage of physiotherapists and orthopaedic nurses, and the only bracemaker for the whole of Indonesia works at the Solo rehabilitation centre to which this new hospital is affiliated.

Most of the young patients are Polio victims, although this disease is much less of a scourge in Indonesia than many other parts of the world.
