  • Description

MR AHMED FOUAD HALIL, THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC'S AMBASSADOR TO MALAWI, WHO WAS EXPELLED BY THE MALAWI GOVERNMENT LAST WEEK, LEFT BLANTYRE ON WEDNESDAY (16 FEB.).

A MALAWI GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT STATED THAT MR HALIL HAD BEEN ASKED TO CLOSE DOWN HIS EMBASSY "BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT CONSIDERED IT NO LONGER APPROPRIATE THAT THE EMBASSY SHOULD CONTINUE TO FUNCTION". THE STATEMENT DID NOT GIVE ANY REASONS FOR THE EXPULSION.

MR HALIL, WHO WAS ESCORTED TO THE AIRPORT BY MALAWI OFFICIALS, SAID THAT HIS EXPULSION STEMMED FROM THE FACT THAT FIVE MALAWI REBELS HAD FLOWN ON EGYPTIAN AIRLINER RECENTLY FROM ALGERIA TO TANZANIA.

HE DENIED THAT OFFICIALS AT HIS EMBASSY HAD TRIED TO BRIBE A MALAWI CABINET MINISTER AND A LOCAL COUNCILLOR.

THE AMBASSADOR WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER AND BY THE U.A.R. THIRD SECRETARY AND FAMILY. THEY FLEW TO NAIROBI.

ON WEDNESDAY, THE MALAWI GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED THAT THE GHANA HIGH COMMISSION IN BLANTYRE WOULD LOOK AFTER U.A.R. INTERESTS IN THE COUNTRY.

TODAY (20TH FEBRUARY), HOWEVER, THE PRIME MINISTER DR HASTINGS BANDA ANNOUNCED HIS DECISION TO WITHDRAW THE MALAWI HIGH COMMISSION IN GHANA BECAUSE OF AN "URGENT NEED TO RESTRICT GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE AND THE PRESENT SHORTAGE OF TRAINED PERSONNEL FOR MALAWI POSTS ABROAD". GHANA HAS BEEN ASKED TO CLOSE ITS HIGH COMMISSION IN MALAWI, SINCE THE MISSIONS OPERATE ON A RECIPROCAL BASIS. FUTURE COMMUNICATIONS WILL IN FUTURE BE MAINTAINED ON A DIRECT BASIS BETWEEN THE TWO GOVERNMENTS.
