Japan Airlines officials set up a special emergency headquarters at Haneda International Airport, Tokyo, Saturday (21 July) At the news broke that the airline had suffered its THIRD hi-jack.

Harassed officials had worked throughout the early hours of the morning, following the course of the Boeing 747 "Jumbo" jet with its 123 passengers and 22 crew as it was flown from Amsterdam to the Middle East under the command, it was reported at the time, of three hi-jackers said to be two Arabs and one Japanese. The Japanese, it was reported, was thought to be a member of the ultra-left-wing "Red Army", and was demanding the release of Kozo Okamoto, sole survivor of the Japanese suicide squad which shot up Tel Aviv airport fourteen months ago.

All but nine of the passengers on the JAL jumbo were Japanese, and the airline published prominent lists of the passengers' names in their hastily constructed Haneda operations room. Extra security police were drafted into the airport on Saturday morning, as the normal passenger traffic continued.

Japan Airlines set up a reception central in the airport hotel for the relatives and friends of the hi-jacked passengers. At one stage during the day, after the aircraft had landed at Dubai, on the Persian Gulf, it was reported that a hand grenade explosion had killed an unidentified woman passenger, and wounded two of the cabin staff, a pulsar and a stewardess. The two were later allowed off the aircraft for treatment at a hospital near Dubai airport.

The Pursar was subsequently allowed to make direct telephone contact with JAL in Tokyo from the Dubai control tower.

At midday Saturday, a Japan Airlines DC8 left Haneda with Japanese medical staff, JAL officials and TV newsmen aboard. It was to fly to Bangkok, where it would refuel before flying on to Dubai.

Tokyo television networks carried constant bulletins on the hi-jacking throughout the day.
