  • Description

Life in the Congolese fishing villages near Coquilhatville, capital of the Equatorial State, where leaders have gathered to discuss the future of the Congo, is almost the same as it was a century ago when Stanley discovered the country.

Hut, of the shore-tribes whose main occupation is fishing, are built into the mangrove swamps or even on sticks in the river. Natives still use dugout boats as in former times. Richer native fishermen can now afford outboard motors to be mounted on their traditional pirogues, dug out from a whole tree.

Along the big river, here up to 15 miles broad, children are not afraid to enjoy a refreshing bath while crocodiles doze in calmer creeks not far away.
