Background: President Anwar Sadat announced last night (Thursday, 4 February) that Egypt agreed to extend the Middle East ceasefire for a further 30 days. He proposed that Israeli troops should be withdrawn from the Suez Canal during that time. In an address to the National Assembly in Cairo five hours before the existing ceasefire was due to expire, he also said that if Israel did pull back its forces, Egypt would begin clearing the 100-mile (160 km) canal, which has been blocked since the June War in 1967.
