  • Description

THE CYPRUS SITUATION: THE UNEASY CALM BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES ON THE ISLAND ITSELF CONTINUES AGAIN TODAY (MONDAY). THE LATEST BULLETIN ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THE U.N. MEDIATOR, MR TUOMIOJA, SAYS HE 'REMAINS UNCHANGED', AFTER THE SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT FOLLOWING HIS OPERATION YESTERDAY.

ON SUNDAY, U THANT'S PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE, SENOR GALA PLAZA, CALLED ON PRESIDENT MAKARIOS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ARRIVING IN THE ISLAND ON FRIDAY. SENOR PLAZA WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE COMMANDER OF THE U.N. PEACE KEEPING FORCE, GENERAL THIMAYYA. WHEN HE ARRIVED ON FRIDAY, SENOR PLAZA TOLD THE PRESS: "I SINCERELY HOPE A SOLUTION CAN BE FOUND AT THE CONFERENCE TABLE WITHOUT FURTHER BLOODSHED."
ONE RESULT OF THE RECENT FIGHTING IN THE NORTHWEST HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN TENSIONS ACROSS THE 'GREEN LINE' DIVIDING THE TWO COMMUNITIES IN NICOSIA. BOTH SIDES HAVE MOVED UP TO THEIR ADVANCED POSITIONS AND NOW FACE EACH OTHER ACROSS A GAP ONLY 20 YARDS (18-METRES) WIDE. ALL MOVEMENT IN THE AREA HAS STOPPED EXCEPT FOR THE UNITED NATIONS PATROLS WHICH ARE MAINTAINING THE PEACE. TENSION IS ALSO RISING WITH THE INCREASINGLY SERIOUS FOOD SHORTAGE IN THE TURKISH QUARTER OF THE OLD CITY.
