  • Description

Rhodesian leader Ian Smith introduced the members of his new cabinet in Salisbury on Monday (13 April). Under Mr. Smith leadership the cabinet is expected to take the country even further to the right following his party's overwhelming election victory last week.

The Rhodesian Front Party, now more firmly confirmed in its power, was given a mandate on Friday (10 April) by white Rhodesian to press ahead with Rhodesia's own special brand of spartheid, under the illegal regime's constitution.

The Front won all 50 white seats in Parliament in the general election, the first since the former British colony unilaterally declared itself independent in 1965.

Fifty-five-year-old Roger Hawkins, brother of English actor Jack Hawkins, is the only new face in the cabinet. He has been appointed Minister of Roads and Minister of Traffic and Power.

Other members of the cabinet include, Mr. Desmond Lardner-Burke, Minister of Justice; Mr. Mark Partridge, Local Government and Housing; Mr. Pieter van Byl, Minister of Information, Immigration and Tourism, John Wrathall, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Philip Smith, Minister of Education.

As Prime Minister Smith looked on, the cabinet members were introduced by acting president Dupont.
