Background: Saudi Defence Minister, Prince Sultan Ben Abdel Aziz, said in Paris on May 11 his country would not pressure Syria to accept President Ronald Reagan's plans for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Lebanon. Prince Sultan was speaking at the start of a six-day visit to France after he met with French President, Francois Mitterrand, at the Elysee Palace. Prince Sultan told newsmen his country would not be used by any other power to exert pressure on a fellow Arab nation. He was commenting on reports that the United States wanted Saudi Arabia to use financial pressure on Syria to encourage the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.
