The secretary general of the Organisation for African Unity, Mr. Nze Ekangaki, made a surprise?
The secretary general of the Organisation for African Unity, Mr. Nze Ekangaki, made a surprise visit to Dar es Salaam on Tuesday (17 July) for talks on the Tanzania-Burundi dispute. His meeting with Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere was said to be "useful and important."
Mr. Ekangaki told reporters his overnight stay in Dar as Salaam was at the request of the D.A.U. chairman, General Yakubu Gowon, of Nigeria, who wanted him to gain firsthand knowledge of the prevailing situation. He also visited Burundi and Rwanda.
Tension has been high between Tanzania and Burundi since 29 June, when, Tanzania alleges Burundi invaded its territory and 10 people were killed. Burundi has flatly denied the charge. Earlier, the Burundi Government had admitted and apologised for an attack on March 15, in which 74 people died.
At present, there are more than 40,000 Burundi refugees in Tanzania. President Nyerere has estimated that 90,000 people have been killed in fighting between majority and minority tribes in Burundi.
