  • Description

ORLY AIRPORT - ONE OF EUROPE'S BUSIEST AIR TERMINALS-WAS COMPLETELY PARALYSED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS THREE MILLION WORKERS FROM MANY INDUSTRIES WENT ON A TWENTY FOUR HOUR STRIKE IN PARIS. THE STRIKE EFFECTED NINE THOUSAND GROUND AND MAINTENANCE STAFF AT ORLY AND MANY FLIGHTS WERE TRANSFERRED TO LE BOURGET AIRPORT. HOWEVER, MANY HAD TO BE CANCELLED.

NEARLY ALL CUSTOMS OFFICERS WERE ON STRIKE TOO - AND EVEN AT LE BOURGET WHERE ALL NON-STRIKING STAFF WERE CONCENTRATED, MANY PASSENGERS WERE ALLOWED TO PASS WITHOUT A CUSTOMS INSPECTION.

THE STRIKES WERE CALLED IN PROTEST AGAINST A GOVERNMENT WAGE FREEZE. AS WELL AS AIRPORT STAFF - RAILWAYMEN, POSTMEN, GAS AND ELECTRICITY WORKERS, TEACHERS AND CIVIL SERVANTS RESPONDED TO THE TWENTY-FOUR HOUR STOPPAGE CALL BY THE UNION FEDERATION. MANY FIRMS GAVE THEIR STAFF THE DAY OFF RATHER THAN ASK THEM TO FIND THEIR OWN WAY TO WORK IN THE FACE OF A COMPLETE STOPPAGE OF CITY TRANSPORT.

THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME SINCE ITS INAUGURATION THAT ORLY AIRPORT HAD BEEN CLOSED. STAFF RETURNED TO WORK THERE AT SEVEN O'CLOCK THIS EVENING.
