    IN CEREMONIES AT THE WEEKEND, TANGANYIKA WAS PROCLAIMED AS A REPUBLIC WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH AND DR. NYERERE WAS SWORN IN AS TANGANYIKA'S FIRST PRESIDENT.

    ARRIVING AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE FOR THE FORMAL OPENING, PRESIDENT NYERERE FIRST INSPECTED THE GUARD OF HONOUR DRAWN FROM TROOPS OF THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES.

    IN HIS SPEECH FORMALLY OPENING A NEW SESSION OF PARLIAMENT, PRESIDENT NYERERE SPOKE IN SWAHILI WHICH WAS BEING USED AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE FIRST TIME.

    PRESIDENT NYERERE SPOKE OF THE ACTION TANGANYIKA WOULD TAKE TO RID THE COUNTRY OF POVERTY, IGNORANCE AND DISEASE. HE SAID THAT RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, INHERITED FROM COLONIALISM, DIVIDED THE COUNTRY WITH AN ECONOMIC DIVISION BETWEEN EDUCATED AND WELL-TO-DO INDIANS AND EUROPEANS AND POORER AFRICANS.
