  • Description

One man was feared dead 16 people were injured after an explosion ripped through a grain elevator at Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday (3 October).

The blast sent flames leaping 200 feet into the air and blew out one whole side of the complex. Several smaller explosions followed the first blast.

The fierce blaze caused by the explosion burned white hot for two hours before it was brought under control by land and sea borne fire fighters. Ships berthed nearby were towed to safety residents were evacuated.

The missing man was last seen high up the elevator by two work mates he helped escape before he was trapped by the blaze. He was one of several men who tried to douse a small fire in a conveyor belt just before the first blast.

Fire fighters said that the explosion appeared to have been caused by the fire igniting explosive grain dust in the elevator.

Police said that they were amazed that apparently only one man has lost his life. First reports had placed the death toll at nine.

SYNOPSIS: Vancouver, where an explosion in a grain elevator left sixteen people injured and one man missing, feared dead.

The blast sent flames shooting two hundred feet into the air, as fire crews moved in by boat and road to combat the blaze.

Ships were towed clear of the scene as fire fighters struggled to bring the fire under control. It took them two hours.

The missing man was last seen by two work mates he helped escape. Before he could join them, the fire trapped him near the elevator top.

At one stage the fire threatened to spread and police took precautionary action to evacuate nearby residents. Fire experts think that a small fire in a conveyor belt caused the main blast. They suspect it ignited explosive grain dust in the elevator.

The missing man had earlier helper others try to put out the conveyor belt blaze just before the first explosion which was followed by several smaller blasts. The police said it was a miracle that apparently only one man was killed.
