  • Description

Torrential rains continue in many parts of Argentina further complicating the flood situation in provinces already declared disaster areas. Government officials estimate about 2,000 people are homeless after being forced to flee the rising waters while in rural areas about 180,000 hectares remain flooded.

SYNOPSIS: In Santa Fe, floodwater shows no sign of abating. One theory is that an underground river has formed between Mar Chiquita Lake and the Cordoba locality of San Pedro de Morteros. Although unconfirmed, experts say this could explain why the water has not drained as it has done in the past.

The Chief of the Evacuation Operation, Oscar Logorio, ordered that the homeless should be accommodated in fifty railway wagons that have been commandeered for the purpose. It's estimated in the Santa Fe province alone, some 1500 people have been forced to find shelter. There railway wagons at best offer only partial relief, taking about 450 of the destitute. The problems for the other thousand or so remain unanswered.

By declaring the Santa Fe region a disaster area, the government has extended special aid to the flood victims including loans which can be obtained from the bank.
