  • Description

Two battalions of Portuguese troops disembarked at Luanda, Angola, June 12, after arriving by sea from Lisbon to reinforce military operations against rebels in the northern areas of Portuguese West Africa.

In an impressive display aimed at bolstering the morale of the white population, the troops were marched in a ceremonial parade through the main through fares to camps just outside the city.

Since the insurrection broke out four months ago, rebels activity has continued unabated. To the north east of N'Gage the rebels are still in strength, and attacks have been made on Santa Cruz and Damba. Despite the persuasion of other countries, the increasing build-up of reinforcements arriving suggests that Portugal is determined to root out the rebellion by military force. Civilians have been evacuated from most northern areas, and a large-scale operation is expected.

The Portuguese Government has issued a decree allocating a special credit of GBP6,250,000 to national defence to be spent on the immediate purchase of materials essential to the defence of Portugal's overseas provinces.
