    MORE THAN A THOUSAND LEADERS OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD GATHERED IN CONSTANCE IN SWITZERLAND OVER THE WEEKEND FOR CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE 550TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUNCIL OF CONSTANCE.

    THE COUNCIL OF CONSTANCE WAS HELD IN 1414 AND WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR FINALLY UNITING THE DIVIDED PAPACY AND ESTABLISHING THE METHOD USED FOR THE ELECTION OF THE POPE.

    BEFORE HIS DEATH, POPE JOHN XXIII PROPOSED MARKING THE 550TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUNCIL WITH SPECIAL CEREMONIES AT CONSTANCE, ON THE SHORES OF LAKE CONSTANCE. POPE PAUL HAS SENT A MESSAGE AND HIS BLESSING TO THE VAST CONGREGATION.

    THE CLERGY, WHICH INCLUDED ARCHBISHOP GAWLINA OF POLAND, CARDINAL KOENIG OF VIENNA, ARCHBISHOP SCHAUFFELE OF FREIBURG, AS WELL AS LEADERS OF THE CHURCH FROM ITALY, WESTERN GERMANY, AND SWITZERLAND, ATTENDED A SPECIAL SERVICE IN THE CONSTANCE MUNSTER ON SUNDAY. THEN FOLLOWED A PROCESSION THROUGH THE TOWN.

    LATER, ALL THE DELEGATES GATHERED NEAR THE MUNSTER. THEY WERE ADDRESSED BY SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VISITORS, AND HEARD A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM POPE PAUL READ BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF FREIBURG.
