  • Description

The President of Greece, General Phaedon Gizikis, visited Jannina, capital of the northern Greek region of Epirus, on Thursday (21 February), to attend the celebrations for the sixty first anniversary of the city's liberation from Turkish rule.

General Gizikis, who was made President of Greece in November after the overthrow of President Papadopoulos, appears in public only rarely. The President reviewed the guard of honour at the village of Emin Agha near Jannina, the centre of the campaign against the Turks, and laid a wreath to those Greeks killed in the campaign.

Later General Gizikis drove to Jannina cathedral and attended a religious ceremony after kissing the gospel proffered by Archbishop Seraphim., Archbishop Seraphim was appointed the new Primate of Greece early in January after General Gizikis' Regime had decided that the appointment of his predecessor, Archbishop Ieronymus, was unconstitutional.

Afterwards, General Gizikis took the salute at a military parade by the armed forces of the northern region.
