  • Description

A RARE BREED OF ANTELOPE, CALLED THE BONGO, IS IN CAPTIVITY IN ABIDJAN ON ITS WAY TO A ZOO IN THE UNITED STATES. KEPT ON AN ESTATE IN ABIDJAN, THE BONGO WAS EXAMINED ON SATURDAY BY A FRENCH ECOLOGIST, M. ADAM. THE ANIMAL, UNIQUE BECAUSE OF ITS HUMPED BACK, HAS BEEN IN CAPTIVITY IN THE IVORY COAST SINCE IT WAS CAUGHT FOUR MONTHS AGO.

THE BONGO IN ABIDJAN, A FEMALE, HAS NOT YET BEEN GIVEN A NAME AND IS SEVEN MONTHS OLD. IT WAS CAPTURED IN A SPARSELY-POPULATED AREA NEAR THE IVORY COAST'S BORDER WITH GHANA. THE MAN WHO CAUGHT IT SAID THERE WERE 20 OTHER BONGOS IN THE SAME AREA; PREVIOUS THEORY HAD IT THAT THE BONGO WAS AN EAST AFRICAN ANIMAL.

THERE ARE BELIEVED TO BE ONLY THREE OTHER BONGOS IN CAPTIVITY: ONE IN KENYA, ONE IN HAMBURG AND A THIRD IN A ZOO IN CLEVELAND, OHIO.

THE IVORIEN BONGO IS TO BE TAKEN TO THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE AEGIS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE OF WASHINGTON, D.C. THE ANIMAL WILL BE SENT TO THE NATIONAL ZOO IN THE AMERICAN CAPITAL. FROM ABIDJAN, THE BONGO WILL GO TO KENYA FOR A PRE-QUARANTINE PERIOD--WHERE IT WILL JOIN ANOTHER BONGO, BEING HELD IN KENYA.

THE ANIMAL WILL THEN GO TO HAMBURG FOR 60 DAYS OF QUARANTINE AND THEN TO A FINAL 30 DAYS OF QUARANTINE AT THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE'S STATION AT CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY. WITH THE IVORIEN BONGO TAKING UP RESIDENCE IN THE UNITED STATES, THREE OF THE FOUR KNOWN BONGOS IN CAPTIVITY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, WILL BE IN AMERICA.

DURING HIS EXAMINATIONS OF THE IVORIEN BONGO, M. ADAM FOUND THAT THE ANIMAL HAD LOST MUCH OF ITS NATURAL SHYNESS AND HAD LOST MOST OF ITS NATURAL FEAR OF MAN.
