  • Description

ONE OF THE MYSTERIES OF NATURE OCCURS EACH YEAR ON MALAY'S BEAUTIFUL EAST COAST. BETWEEN JUNE AND SEPTEMBER, GREAT LEATHERY TURTLES INVADE THE BEACHES NEAR DUNGAN IN TRENGGANU.

AN ENORMOUS CREATURE, MOTHER TURTLE MEASURES FOUR TO SIX FEET LONG AND LAYS A HUNDRED OR MORE EGGS AT A TIME. AT THE END OF HER LABOURS THE TURTLE FILLS IN THE CAVITY AND FLATTENS THE SURROUNDING SAND IN THE HOPE THAT HER NEST WILL NOT BE DISCOVERED. AND THEN SHE SLOWLY LUMBERS BACK TO HER WATERY HOME.

THE COLLECTION OF THESE TURTLE EGGS IS BIG BUSINESS ON THE EAST COAST. STRETCHES OF BEACH ARE LEASED OUT TO PEOPLE FROM KAMPONG WHO SELL THE EGGS - THEIR PROFIT RUNS INTO MANY HUNDREDS OF POUND A SEASON.

WHEN LEFT ALONE THE EGGS HATCH IN ABOUT SIX WEEKS. THE YOUNG TURTLES BREAK OUT OF THEIR SOFT, EASILY DENTED SHELLS AND WRIGGLE OUT OF THE SAND. DRIVEN BY COMPELLING INSTINCT, THEY MAKE IMMEDIATELY FOR THE SEA. WHEN THEY LEAVE THE BEACH THEY WEIGH ONLY AN OUNCE - WHEN THEY RETURN THEY WEIGH OVER A THOUSAND ONLY AN OUNCE - WHEN THEY RETURN THEY WEIGH OVER A THOUSAND POUNDS. NO ONE KNOWS THE LAPSE OF TIME BETWEEN THE EVENTS.

TURTLES DO NOT LIVE FOREVER. THEY DIE AN HAVE TO BE REPLACED BY THEIR OFFSPRING. BECAUSE THE BEACHES IN TRENGGANU ARE THE WORLD'S LARGEST NESTING PLACES, MALAYA HAS A SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS PRESERVATION.

THE MALAYAN NATURE SOCIETY HAS MADE A GOOD START ON THIS. ??? FINANCIALLY SUPPORT FROM THE STATE GOVERNMENT, THE SOCIETY RECENTLY ORGANIZED AN EXPEDITION IN A BID TO SAVE THE TURTLES FROM EXTINCTION. SEVENTY NATURE COVERS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, INCH AZIZ BIN ISHAK, TOOK PART IN THE EXPERIMENT.

WORKING IN GROUPS THEY TRANSPLANTED NEARLY 10,000 EGGS TO THE HATCHERIES. AT THE END OF THE HATCHING PERIOD, A FINE ??? OF BABY TURTLES WAS RECOVERED. REARED IN TUBS FOR A SHORT WHILE, THEY WERE THEN TAKEN 1/2 MILE FROM SHORE FOR DISTRIBUTION SO THAT SHARKS AND OTHER MEAT EATERS WOULD NOT FIND THEM.

BY YEARLY EFFORTS OF THIS NATURE, THE PEOPLE OF MALAYA WILL NOT ONLY FURTHER A PROFITABLE INDUSTRY BUT WILL ALSO SAVE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS ONE OF THE RAREST CREATURE OF THE DEEP.
