A new personality emerging in the confused Congo scene is Mr. Cleophas Kamitatu, Provincial Governor?
A new personality emerging in the confused Congo scene is Mr. Cleophas Kamitatu, Provincial Governor of Leopoldville, and Vice President of one of the two big parties in the Province, the Parti Solidaire Africain.
The party is headed by Mr. Lumumba's colleague and friend, Mr Gizenga. Kamitatu appears to lean towards Lumumba rather than Colonel Mobutu. He has said he would meet Lumumba and President Kasavubu in an attempt to find a solution for the crisis, and has alleged that recent acts of violence in Leopoldville's African city were the work of Mobutu's men, although they are attributed also to supporters of Lumumba.
UN Representative Dayal, with whom Mobutu has broken off relations, has agreed to put 370 Ghanaian police at Kamitatu's disposal, to assist the police of the province. Kamitatu is - like Lumumba - closely guarded by police at his home, for hear of assassination attempts, and our cameraman was searched from head to foot before being allowed in to see him.
