AS RIOTING CONTINUED IN THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL OF SAIGON, BUDDHIST LEADERS TODAY (SUNDAY) DECLARED THAT THEY NO LONGER HAD ANY CONFIDENCE IN THE COUNTRY'S TEN-MONTH-OLD MILITARY GOVERNMENT LED BY AIR MARSHAL NGUYEN CAO KY.

THERE WAS RIOTING OUTSIDE SAIGON'S BUDDHIST INSTITUTE ON FRIDAY. DEMONSTRATORS CARRYING BANNERS DEMANDING "FREEDOM" THREW STONES AT TROOPS AND POLICE WHO RETALIATED WITH TEAR GAS BOMBS.

THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST VIOLENT OF THE RIOTS IN THE LATEST OUTBREAK AIMED AT THE OVERTHROW OF THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER KY.

TODAY (SUNDAY) LEADING BUDDHIST MONKS CALLED FOR ALL BUDDHIST'S, STUDENTS AND YOUTHS TO UNITE "TO REALISE THE ASPIRATIONS AND WISHES OF THE PEOPLE" -- AND ELECTED CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT.

ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT TURN IN THE POLITICAL SITUATION WAS A STATEMENT BY ROMAN CATHOLIC LEADERS IN SAIGON OPPOSING THE "REBELLION" ON THE NORTH.

DA NANG AND OTHER NORTHERN CITIES HAVE BEEN CENTRES OF ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATIONS FOR CIVIL RULE. TROOPS IN THE NORTHERN PROVINCE HAVE COME OUT AGAINST THE KY GOVERNMENT WHO HAVE SENT THEIR WON LOYAL TROOPS TO DA NANG TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION. SO FAR THE TWO SIDES HAVE NOT CLASHED.
