  • Description

Portuguese Foreign Minister Mario Soares said in Paris on Saturday (1 June) that negotiations with Portuguese Guinea insurgents were making good progress. He denied that the ceasefire talks, being held in London, had bogged down. The Minister told newsmen that the two sides had agreed on some very important points and added that the talks would resume on 8 June.

Dr. Soares was in Paris on his way back to Lisbon to report on the state of the London talks. During his brief stop-over he met French Foreign Minister Jean Sauvagnargues and President Senghor of Senegal, who is in Paris to receive a literary prize.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister said he had met his French counterpart to profit from France's experience in the field of deconlonisation. ??? Sauvagnargues, in reply, said France and Portugal were now "on the same wavelength". And he promised to use French influence in Africa to assist the Portuguese efforts.

Dr. Soares met President Senghor because Senegal shares a common border with Portuguese Guinea - recently proclaimed the independent states of Guinea-Bissau by the African Nationalists. The President has been instrumental in peace-making efforts in the area, which has seen 13 years of conflict between guerrillas and Portuguese troops.
