  • Description

WITH THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WELL UNDER WAY, POLITICAL OBSERVERS WERE STILL FORECASTING A CLOSE FINISH BETWEEN DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE VICE-PRESIDENT HUBERT HUMPHREY AND REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE RICHARD NIXON. YESTERDAY, ON ELECTION EVE, HUMPHREY'S CHANCES WERE BOOSTED BY A SUDDEN SWING IN THE POLLS IN HIS FAVOUR, AND THE NARROW MARGIN BETWEEN THE TWO MAIN CANDIDATES ON MOST PUBLIC OPINION POLLS WAS SO SLIGHT THAT THERE WAS DOUBT THAT A NEW PRESIDENT COULD BE ACCLAIMED THIS WEEK. LATE TONIGHT, AFTER 24 PER CENT OF THE POPULAR VOTE HAD BEEN ACCOUNTED. NIXON WAS MAINTAINING A SLIGHT LEAD WITH 41 PER CENT TO HUMPHREY'S 40 PER CENT . THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE GEORGE WALLACE, FORMER GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA, WAS TRAILING WITH 18 PER CENT.

IF WALLACE PREVENTS EITHER NIXON OR HUMPHREY FROM WINNING THE NECESSARY 270 ELECTORAL VOTES, THE ELECTION WILL GO TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WHERE HUMPHREY WOULD BE FAVOURED BY THE DEMOCRAT MAJORITY THERE.

MAIN FEATURES OF THE EARLY RETURNS APPEARED TO BE THAT THERE WERE NO MAJOR SURPRISES IN THE VOTING FOR NIXON AND HUMPHREY, BUT WALLACE APPARENTLY FAILED TO SIPHON OFF AS MANY VOTES AS HE HAD EXPECTED IN THE SOUTHERN AND BORDER STATES.

THE RACE FOR ELECTRICAL VOTES WAS ALSO RUNNING ALMOST NECK FOR NECK, BUT WITH NIXON JUST AHEAD.

A NUMBER OF AMERICAN COMMUNITIES WASTED LITTLE TIME OPENING THE VOTING POLLS, AND SOME COMPLETED VOTING EARLY TODAY. THE FIRST TWO COMMUNITIES TO REPORT FINAL VOTING RESULTS WERE TWO HAMLETS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE - DIXVILLE NOTCH AND ELLSWORTH. VOTING AT DIXVILLE NOTOK-TRADITIONALLY REPUBLICAN - WENT FOR HUMPHREY BY EIGHT VOTES TO FOUR. AT ELLSWORTH ALL TWELVE VOTES WENT TO NIXON.
