SYNOPSIS: President Salvador Allende's Popular Front government called a "National Day of Volunteer Work" in Chile on Sunday. About two million Chileans, including political, military, and labour leaders, were at work on a variety of projects to help poor people throughout the country. The government said the unpaid work represented Chilean socialism.

President Allende joined in the work on the outskirts of Santiago, in a slum named Che Guevara, after the guerrilla fighter killed in Bolivia in 1967. The President was greeted by a large crowd when he entered the area. Before getting to work himself, he had a look at some of the other projects being carried out. Workers from the university of Chile Veterinary School were out giving anti-rabies shots, and groups of dentists were in the area with mobile equipment. Other students were busy cleaning up public buildings, such as schools and jails.

The President helped out by working as a joiner on prefabricated houses that had been brought into the area. Having stripped off his coat, he climbed to the roof of one of the dwellings and began hammering nails to join the sections of the dwelling. President Allende became Latin America's first elected Marxis ruler last autumn. He has since extended that victory in the nationwide municipal elections in April. Events such as this may be designed to ensure his popularity.

Ernesto Guevara Lyon, the father of Che Guevara, flew over from Argentina especially to take part in this "National Day of Volunteer Work". His son is something of a hero to these people, and his pictures are posted throughout Chile.
