    DURING HIS VISIT TO THE SPEED SKATING RINK, POPOVITCH MET RUSSIA'S TOP COMPETITORS. A TIME FOR CONGRATULATIONS HERE - RUSSIA HAS WON 10 GOLD MEDALS, EIGHT SILVER AND FIVE BRONZE SO FAR.

    ALSO TODAY, AWAY FROM THE SPORTING EVENTS AT INNSBRUCK, TWO AMERICAN OLYMPIC COMPETITORS WENT BEFORE A LOCAL COURT ON CHARGES OF VIOLENCE IN A PUBLIC PLACE AND INSULTING THE AUSTRIAN POLICE. BILL MAROLT - 12TH IN SUNDAY'S MEN'S GIANT SLALOM - WAS SENTENCED TO THREE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT AND GEORGE FARMER TO THREE AND A HALF MONTHS. BOTH SENTENCES WERE SUSPENDED FOR 3 YEARS.

    ANOTHER AMERICAN MIKE HESSEL WAS ACQUITTED. ALL THREE HAD PLEADED NOT GUILTY. HESSEL WAS 22ND IN TUESDAY'S TOBOGGAN MEN'S SINGLES. FARMER WAS 29TH IN THE SAME EVENT. THEY TOLD THE COURT THEY HAD BEEN BEATEN UP BY THE POLICE. A CHARGE OF STEALING A CAR WAS DROPPED AGAINST THEM.
