  • Description

FRENCH RAILWAYS SHOWED NEWSMEN, JUNE 17, A SPECIAL TRAIN DESIGNED TO CARRY CARS THROUGH THE PROPOSED CHANNEL TUNNEL BETWEEN BRITAIN AND FRANCE.

THE RAILWAYS' DEMONSTRATION GIVEN IN COOPERATION WITH THE STUDY COMMISSION FOR THE FUTURE TUNNEL WAS CARRIED OUT BETWEEN THE PARIS GARE DE LYONS AND FONTAINEBLEAU - THE DISTANCE BEING THE SAME AS THE TUNNEL - 60 KILOMETRES (37 MILES).

NEWSMEN DROVE THEIR CARS ONTO THE RAIL WAGONS, AND HAD ONLY TO APPLY THE HANDBRAKES OF THEIR CARS BEFORE SETTLING DOWN WITHOUT FURTHER EFFORT FOR THE IMAGINARY JOURNEY FROM CALAIS TO DOVER. AT FONTAINEBLEAU THEY DROVE OFF - LENGTH OF OPERATION FROM START T FINISH: 45 MINUTES.

TRANSPORT TRAINS FOR THE TUNNEL, IT IS PROPOSED, WILL ALSO CARRY LORRIES AND COACHES. AND TO CARRY MORE CARS IN PEAK PERIODS, WAGONS WILL BE BUILT WITH DOUBLE DECKS, LEAVING EVERY FIVE OR TEN MINUTES FROM THE CHANNEL TERMINAL.

THE TUNNEL GROUP ESTIMATE THE ENTIRE COST OF THE BUILDING OF THE RUNNEL AT GBP130M. MEANWHILE A RIVAL GROUP ARE PUSHING AHEAD WITH THEIR PROPOSALS TO BUILD A BRIDGE OVER THE CHANNEL AT A TOTAL COST OF GBP220M. BOTH HAVE THEIR EYE ON COMMON MARKET TRAFFIC AND ARE SEEKING THE FRENCH AND BRITISH GOVERNMENTS' APPROVAL TO BUILD - UNDER OR OVER - THIS YEAR.
