Background: Competitors from twelve nations gathered at England's Bristol Docks on Saturday (30 June) for the first day of one of Europe's great powerboat races -- the Embassy Grand Prix.

The two day event was expected to draw crowds of 50,000 on each day, and more than two miles of safety barriers were erected along the edge of the docks in Bristol's city centre.

The top class boats -- the Formula one racers -- reached speeds of up to one-hundred-miles an hour (160 kilometres) over the three kilometres course (just under two miles).

Now in its second year, the Embassy Grand Prix is rated by some experts as on-par with the two major events in powerboat racing, the Paris six-hour race and the Outboard World Championships in Arizona.

The Bristol Docks provide a testing course for the event. With a total width of 120 feet (36 metres), the layout sends boats passing each other in opposite directions at speeds of around one-hundred-miles an hour. As well, turbulence from propellors can bring sunken debris floating to the surface.

In the first day's Formula One Race, a United States professional driver, Bob Hering, swept to the lead in a Molinari Special.
