    President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania opened the Pan African Congress -- the first to be held on African soil -- in Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (19 July). He said the purpose of the conference was to fine ways to oppose racialism and oppression of all kinds.

    This is the sixth pan african Congress. The last one was held in the United Kingdom in 1945.

    Delegations from more than 30 countries in Africa, North America and the Caribbean are attending the nine-day conference. They will consider a number of issues involving Pan African co-operation, especially the anti-colonial guerrilla movements in southern Africa and the need to share out fairly the world's resources.

    Tanzanian Vice President Aboud Jumbe -- who is chairman of the Congress -- made the opening speech.

    He was followed by President Nyerere. The President warned against Black Power declarations which would alienate Africa from the rest of the Third World. He said their discussions must take place in the context of a world-wide movement for human equality.
