ON WEDNESDAY, EX-PRESIDENT YUN PO SUNG LED 20 OF HIS FOLLOWERS THROUGH THE STREETS OF SEOUL IN A PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THIS EXTENSION OF MILITARY RULE.THE MARCHERS LOCKED ARMS AT CITY HALL PLAZA, MARCHED PAST THE AMERICAN EMBASSY WITH SHOUTS OF "LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA, AND TRIED TO BREAK THROUGH A POLICE CORDON.

IN THE SCUFFLE THAT FOLLOWED, MOST OF THEM, INCLUDING MR.YUN, WERE BUNDLED INTO POLICE JEEPS AND DRIVEN AWAY.THERE WAS A GOOD DEAL OF PUSHING BUT NO OUTRIGHT FIGHTING.THE POLICE HAD CLUBS BUT DID NOT USE THEM.MR YUN, TAKEN HOME BY POLICE, TOLD REPORTERS HE HAD NOT GONE TO THE PLAZA TO DEMONSTRATE."I WENT THERE FOR A WALK," HE SAID.

A RIVAL CIVILIAN POLITICAL LEADER WHO HAS JOINED HIM IN HIS STRUGGLE, EX-PREMIER HUH CHUNG, ARRIVED LATE FOR THE DEMONSTRATION AND WAS TAKEN TO SOUTH GATE POLICE STATION.

NEXT MORNING, THURSDAY, MR.CHUNG - LEADER OF THE NEW POLITICS PARTY - HELD AN INDOOR RALLY AT HIS PARTY HEADQUARTERS IN THE CITY.HE TOLD HIS AUDIENCE THAT NOBODY WOULD STOP THEIR STRUGGLE TO TERMINATE MILITARY RULE.

AS HE WAS SPEAKING, TRUCK LOADS OF RIOT POLICE DREW UP OUTSIDE AND ENTERED THE BUILDING.THEY MADE NO ARRESTS HOWEVER AS PARTY LEADERS PROMISED NOT TO HOLD DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE STREET AFTER THE MEETING.

(GENERAL PARK ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT HE WAS WITH-DRAWING FOR TWELVE DAYS HIS PROPOSAL THAT MILITARY RULE BE EXTENDED TO GIVE POLITICIANS TIME TO PURGE THEIR RANKS OF CORRUPT ELEMENTS.
