  • Description

The floods which have swept Eastern Australia had claimed seventeen lives by Saturday (19 January). They also caused damage estimated at more than 100 million Australian dollars (65 million sterling).

Tens of thousands of sheep and cattle are thought to have drowned or died through starvation and disease -- despite a big military airlift of fodder.

In the northern New South Wales town of Walgett, residents built a seven-foot (over two-metre) mud dyke to hold back the floodwaters. The town, which has 1,700 residents, was isolated for a week.

Stock losses around Walgett have been estimated at 09 per cent, and many hard-hit property owners are expected to leave the land.

SYNOPSIS: Floodwaters which have swept Eastern Australia had claimed seventeen lives by Saturday, and caused damage estimates at more than 100 million Australian dollars. Tens of thousands of sheep and cattle are expected to be lost through drowning, starvation and disease. In areas of New South Wales, stock loses are as high as ninety per cent.

A caravan ripped apart not by floods, but by pigs and poultry in their frenzy to escape rising waters. Here in Northern New South wales, literally thousands of square miles of grazing land have been covered by floodwaters.

Kangaroos have been caught in the floods and their feet swollen to twice their normal size.

The real extend of animal losses will only be known after the waters subside.

This property, covering 11,000 acres, was isolated by the month-long floods. The owner moved from northern Australia eighteen months ago to escape drought -- only to be confronted with another extreme of nature.

Despite air drops of fodder, whole herds of cattle and sheep have been wiped out. On one property 13,000 sheep were lost in the floods. When the waters drop, many more animals will die -- stranded in thick mud pools. As a result of the floods, many hard-hit property owners will be forced to leave the land.
