  • Description

Malaysia has tightened security along the Thailand border following increased activity by Communist insurgent sin the North Malaysian State of Perak.

The civil administration has been told by the military to increase its efforts to quell Communist insurgency which is gaining strength on the Malaysian peninsular.

The Malaysian Army chief, Lt-Gen Dato Sri Mohamed Sany recently told a meeting of the state's Security Committee that military effort formed only 30 per cent of the combined struggle.

The remaining government work to "win the hearts and minds of the people" against Communist influence, was simply not there, he said.

Lt-Gen. Sandy said a military administration was being considered for Perak because of the worsening situation.

Insurgents have been harassing the $M80 million (GBP16 million sterling) East-West highway, causing about $M15 million (GBP3 million sterling) damage. They have also been threatening Korean workers building the five bridges in the highway project.

Troop reinforcements have been sent to the area and the Army regularly patrols the finished section of the road in armoured cars.

Army platoons patrol the jungle bordering the highway. army camps have been set up at every mile on the new road and soldiers search every vehicle.

Field Force troops manning checkpoints leading to plantations and cultivated area make sure workers take in only enough food to last them a day. Checks are also made on people entering and leaving the areas to screen Communist subversives.
