    SCORES OF HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED NEAR THE TOWN OF SANTA BARBARA IN CALIFORNIA BY SERIOUS BRUSH FIRES STILL RAGING OUT OF CONTROL OVER AN AREA ESTIMATED AT NEARLY 100,000 ACRES.

    NEARLY TWO THOUSAND FIREFIGHTERS ARE AT THE SCENE BUT THEIR WORK IS HAMPERED BY A HOT WIND -- KNOWN LOCALLY AS THE 'DEVIL WIND' -- WHICH IS FANNING THE FIRE.

    THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA, MR EDMUND G. BROWN, HAS ALERTED THE STATE NATIONAL GUARD FOR POSSIBLE FIRE-FIGHTING DUTY ANYWHERE IN THE STATE AS REPORTS OF FURTHER SERIOUS FIRES COME FROM BOTH THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN PARTS OF CALIFORNIA.

    MANY OF THE HOMES DESTROYED IN THE BLAZE WERE THE HOMES OF WEALTHY BUSINESS MEN AND DAMAGE IS PUT AT ABOUT A MILLION AND A QUARTER POUNDS. ONE OF THE HOUSES DESTROYED WAS THE TWENTY-ROOM MANSION OWNED BY MR AVERY BRUNDAGE, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE.
