  • Description

Australian football reached an all time high point on Saturday (27 April) when they beat twice world champions Uruguay 2-0 in Sydney.

Both sides have qualified for the World Cup finals in West Germany in June so the game an important warm-up.

At the start Uruguay's close passing and ball control put them on top, but they squandered an open goal and several chances.

By the second half the Australian defence was getting the measure of the Uruguayans and the Australian attack was pressing forward. Uruguay replied with some brutal fouls but they could not stop Australian forward Baartz scoring with a strong, long shot after 59 minutes.

Uruguayan defender Galisto was sent off a quarter of a hour later for striking Ray Baartz. Baartz played on but collapsed after the game and was taken to hospital with a paralysed left side.

Morena equalised for Uruguay but the goal was disallowed for handball and within minutes Australia's Ollerton had put another goal past the demoralised South Americans.

Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernandez came racing to the halfway line as Ollerton picked up Baartz's clearance. Ollerton flicked the ball over the goalkeeper's head and ran trough to score.
