Background: Khmer President Lon Nol paid his last respects to assassinated Education Minister Keo Sangkim on Monday (10 June).
The government guest house in Phnompenh, where the bodies of Mr. Sangkim and his aide, Thach Chea, were lying in state, was heavily guarded by some 1,000 Khmer troops and 20 armoured vehicles.
During the 15-minute ceremony, President Lon Nol decorated Mr. Sangkim and Mr. Chea posthumously.
The former Education Minister and his aide were killed during clashes last week between military police and students demonstrating against the arrest of their classmates for alleged subversion.
The vast security arrangements for the President's visit to the guest house underlined the present state of tension in this virtually beseiged Khmer capital.
The state funeral for the assassinated minister and his aide was called off at the last minute on Sunday (9 June) because Communist-led insurgents were reportedly planning heavy rocket attacks.
