  • Description

The President of the Congo, Sassou Nguesso recently held talks in N'Djamena with Chad leaders on the implementation of the accord signed in Nigeria in August to end more than ten years of political strife and civil war in Chad.

SYNOPSIS: President Nguesso was met at N'Djamena airport by Chad's head of state Oueddei Goukouni. The nine rival groups fighting for power in the country were party to the Lagos treaty and agreed to form a government of National Union behind President Goukouni.

The Congo is one of three African countries, along with Guinea and Benin, pledged to provide peace-keeping forces to police the cease-fire agreed in Lagos. Discussions between the Congolese and Chad delegations centred on the way in which the troops should be deployed throughout the country. It was resolved during the two days of talks to base the peace-keeping forces in five cities including the capital, two cities in the predominantly Moslem north and two in the Christian south.
