    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE CALLED ON FRANCE'S ANGRY FARMERS TODAY (TUESDAY) TO SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT MOVES TO SOLVE THEIR DIFFICULTIES RATHER THAN OBSTRUCT THEM. THE PRESIDENTIAL APPEAL, ISSUED AFTER THE WEEKLY CABINET MEETING FOLLOWED NATIONWIDE DEMONSTRATIONS BY FARMERS YESTERDAY IN WHICH NEARLY 300 PEOPLE WERE INJURED.

    THERE WERE DEMONSTRATIONS ALL OVER FRANCE YESTERDAY ORGANISED BY THE NATIONAL FARMERS' UNION. THE UNION LEFT THE FARMERS TO CHOOSE THEIR OWN METHODS OF DEMONSTRATION AND VIOLENCE ERUPTED IN SOME PLACES, PARTICULARLY IN BRITTANY.

    AT REDON ABOUT 20 DEMONSTRATORS WERE INJURED WHEN FARMERS FOUGHT WITH POLICE. THE FARMERS SAY THEIR INCOME IS NOT KEEPING PACE WITH THOSE IN OTHER INDUSTRIES AND THAT THEIR INCOME RISE THIS YEAR WILL BE ONLY A THIRD OF THE GROWTH RATE FORESEEN IN THE NATIONAL ECONOMIC PLAN.

    THE WORST VIOLENCE WAS AT QUIMPER WHERE MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE WERE INJURED -- ??? OF THEM SERIOUSLY. ANGRY FARMERS TORE COBBLESTONES OUT OF THE STREET TO HURL AT POLICE, AND THE POLICE REPLIED WITH TEAR-GAS. ONE RIOT SQUAD POLICEMAN AND ONE DEMONSTRATOR RECEIVED FRACTURED SKULLS.
