  • Description

The world heavyweight boxing champion, George Foreman, has said he intends to donate money to African countries currently suffering under as prolonged drought.

Foreman, speaking at the United Nations on Friday (21st June), said he was not professionally qualified to work for the people in the drought-stricken areas of the Sahel region, but he was making "lots of money". Foreman said he could find ways of making some contribution through the money he was making.

Foreman meets Muhammad Ali in the ring in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, on the 24th of September. Each fighter has been promised five million U.S. dollars (about 2 million pounds sterling) for stepping into the ring. The paid attendance is reckoned at 100,000 people, and the potential world-wide television audience at 1,000 million.

Asked about the outcome of the bout, Foreman said "I'd like to think it'll end pretty quick. I'll have a knockout - and nobody gets hurt."
