  • Description

Australia took a 2-0 lead over Chile Friday (14 August) in the American Zone Davis Cup finals at Menneapolis, Minnesota.

Roy Emerson, No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, beat Pat Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-2, 8-6.

Earlier, Fred Stolle, Australia's No. 2 player, downed Pat Cornejo, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Stolle's all-around game forced Cornejo into nearly a dozen errors in the opening set, the only one in which the Chilean appeared as if he might make a fight out of it.

Cornejo took Stolle to deuce twice in each of the first games, but seemed to weaken when he double-faulted twice in the first set to give Stolle his first service breakthrough at 3-1.

Rodriguez gave Emerson, the Wimbledon titleholder, trouble with skillful passing and drop shots before succumbing to the Australian's forcing strokes.

In the third set each man broke the other's service to send play into the first deuce set of the competition. Emerson broke Rodriguez's serve to go ahead 7-6 and ran out the match on his own serve when the Chilean netted a match point return with the score at 40-30.

The winner of the American Zone finals will play Sweden at Baastad beginning August 29th for the right to challenge the United States the bolder of the cup, at Cleveland, Ohio, in September.
