KASSEM, ACTING F.A.O. REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR AFRICA, SPOKE LAST MONDAY (28 OCTOBER) OF THE IMPORTANT INFLUENCE WHICH THE BETTER TRAINING OF WOMEN IN HOME ECONOMICS COULD HAVE ON THE WELFARE OF THEIR NATIONS.

    DR. L.M. JURADO, F.A.O. HOME ECONOMICS EXPERT, SPOKE OF THE HIGH PRIORITY GIVEN TO THIS TASK BY HER ORGANISATION.

    DELEGATES TO THE CONFERENCE, WHICH IS TO LAST ONE WEEK, CAME FROM GHANA, SENEGAL, ETHIOPIA, NIGERIA, SIERRA LEONE AND TANZANIA. THERE ARE ALSO OBSERVER FROM THE U.N. INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S EMERGENCY FUND IN NIGERIA, THE HOLY SEE, THE GHANA Y.M.C.A. AND THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA. ALL THESE BODIES ARE REPRESENTED ON THE F.A.O. AD HOC CONSULTATION GROUP ON PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT IN HOME ECONOMICS IN AFRICA.

    DR. KASSEM CALLED FOR GREATER APPRECIATION OF THE PART PLAYED IN THEIR NATION'S PROGRESS BY WOMEN WHO ARE WELL VERSED IN THE CARE OF HOME AND FAMILY. DR. JURADO SAID THAT THE HOME ECONOMICS PROGRAMME FOR THE AFRICAN REGION WAS GIVEN PRIORITY AMONG F.A.O. PROJECTS; PLANS FOR INTENSIFYING THIS PROGRAMME DURING V.U.N. SECOND DEVELOPMENT DECADE - 1970 TO 1980 - WERE NOW BEING MADE.
