    Arab leaders arrived in rapid succession in algiers on Sunday (25 November) for their first Summit meeting since the october war with Israel.

    They included the head of the United Arab Emirates, Zaid Ben Soltan. President Haffez Al Asead of Syria and King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

    Each was greeted by algerian President Houari Boumedienne to the booming of a 21-gun salute.

    The main aim of the Summit meeting is to ensure firm Arab backing for Egypt and Syria, who called the conference, when they enter negotiations for a permanent peace settlement with Israel. The negotiations are expected in mid-December at the United Nations.

    However, two powerful members of the Arab League -- Libya and Iraq -- are boycotting the Summit because their leaders are against the Middle East ceasefire.

    A militant tone has accompanied much of the preparation for the Summit, which was organised during a two-day meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers in Algiers.     Observers said plans were being made to reinforce the oil boycott to curb support for Israel, to co-ordinate Arab forces to confront Israel with the chance of losing as future war. to pool Arab funds for buying arms, and to adopt a number of other measures to strengthen the hand of Egypt, Syria and Jordan when they meet Israel at peace talks.

    On his arrival for the Summit, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia said he hoped each Arab state would fulfil its obligations consciously to liberate the occupied Arab territories. A delegation official said Saudi Arabia would continue its oil boycott of the United States and Holland until Israel pulled out from all the occupied territories.
