Background: PREPARATIONS ARE GOING ON IN LONDON FOR THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS' 1969 SUMMER EXHIBITION, WHICH IS DUE TO OPEN NEXT SATURDAY (3 MAY). ALTOGETHER, 1255 WORKS OF ART HAVE BEEN ENTERED FOR THE EXHIBITION - ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ART CALENDAR IN ENGLAND.

THE EXHIBITION FEATURES A WIDE RANGE OF WORKS, FROM OIL PAINTINGS, WATER-COLOURS, DRAWINGS, ENGRAVINGS, ETCHINGS AND COLOUR PRINTS, TO COIN COLLECTIONS, ARCHITECTURAL MODELS AND SCULPTURE.

SOME OF THE WORKS WERE FILMED IN THIS SPECIAL PREVIEW OF THE EXHIBITION.

THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS WAS FOUNDED 200 YEARS AGO LAST DECEMBER, AND ITS SUMMER EXHIBITION HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT ONE FOR BRITAIN'S ARTISTS.

DESPITE COMPETITION FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS, THE ROYAL ACADEMY HAS REMAINED ONE PLACE IN WHICH THE ARTIST WHO SEEKS TO WORK FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC CAN BEST MAKE HIS NAME.

MANY FAMOUS WORKS HAVE APPEARED AT THE SUMMER EXHIBITION OVER THE YEARS, INCLUDING THOSE OF WHISTLER - "WHISTLER'S MOTHER" - CONSTABLE, WILSON STEER, GAINSBOROUGH AND MANY OTHERS.

WORKS IN THE EXHIBITION ARE SELECTED BY THE ROYAL ACADEMY COUNCIL, UNDER THE PRESIDENT, SIR THOMAS MONNINGTON. MR. JAMES FITTON, A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL SUPERVISED THE HANGING. THE EXHIBITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL 27 JULY.
