  • Description

In Poland the second Warsaw Art Fair opened to the public recently, with the aim of popularising the work of contemporary artists.

SYNOPSIS: The organisers brought together a collection of works that in their words "would look good in anyone's home". From glassware to ceramics through pottery and sculpture, the idea was to offer the people of Warsaw the chance to acquire works of contemporary art at prices most of them could afford. Both established and younger artists took part in the exhibition, which was held at the state-owned Market Building, donated for the occasion free of change.

Polish poster art is famous all over the world and very popular among young people. Posters are a good medium for young artists too -- they can offer their work for sale in this form for as little as 50 Polish zlotys (2.67 US dollars).

With the fashion for wall-hangings sweeping Europe, tapestries have emerged from a long period of neglect as an art form. Polish artists working in this medium include Hanna Muszynska, Janina Habdas and Magdalena Abakanowicz, all of whom had pieces on display at the fair. Artistic expression ranged from the abstract through formalism and realism to what is described as "hyper-realism". The most expensive work on display was priced at 20,000 zlotys (1066 US dollars).

According to the organisers, the two fairs held so far have proved so popular that it is now expected that the exhibition will become an annual event. The artists give part of what they earn during the fair to the National Health Preservation Fund.
