    DANILO DOLCI'S SIX-DAY PROTEST MARCH THROUGH SICILY ENDED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN THE ISLAND'S CAPITAL -- PALERMO. THE RALLY THAT MARKED THE END OF THE MARCH WAS DISRUPTED BY A 20-STRONG GROUP OF DEMONSTRATORS, PROTESTING LOUDLY ABOUT THE VIETNAM CONFLICT.

    THE BREAKAWAY DEMONSTRATORS HANGED PRESIDENT JOHNSON IN EFFIGY AND CHANTED THE NAME OF NORTH VIETNAMESE PRESIDENT, HO CHI MINH. AFTER REPEATED APPEALS FOR ORDER THEY FINALLY QUIETENED DOWN.

    THE 90-MILE (140-KILOMETRE) MARCH CAME AT THE CLIMAX TO A 14-YEAR CAMPAIGN WHICH 42-YEAR-OLD DOLCI WAGED AGAINST MAFIA POWER IN SICILY. THE MARCH WAS ALSO TO PROTEST AGAINST THE VIETNAM SITUATION, BUT DOLCI'S AIDES STRESSED THEY WERE NOT DEMONSTRATING SPECIFICALLY AGAINST THE AMERICANS. THEY WERE DEMONSTRATING FOR PEACE IN VIETNAM.

    THE MARCH WAS ALSO IN PROTEST AGAINST THE LACK OF GOVERNMENT DEVELOPMENT IN SICILY.

    AT THE END OF THE MARCH DOLCI LED 500 FOLLOWERS INTO PALERMO.
