Background: The President of Mauritania, M. Mokhtar Ould Daddah, has been on a two-day visit to Mali, to discuss frontier problems with the Mali Head of State, Lieutenant Moussa Traore. Both leaders afterwards expressed themselves as being very satisfied with the outcome of the talks.

The meeting took place at Kayes, near the frontier, on July 20th and 21st. President Ould Daddah, who was accompanied by several of his ministers, was welcomed at the airport by President Traore. After reviewing a guard of honour, the two Presidents drove through crowded streets into the town to be welcomed by the Governor of Kayes. President Ould Daddah, in reply thanked the people of Kayes for the warm welcome they had given him.

In their talks, the two Presidents agreed to leave the settlement of the disputed points on their 2,000 kilometre (1,250 mile) frontier to a joint mixed commission. The settlement was to be in accordance with the 1944 colonial arrangements which originally fixed the border, and the 1963 treaty between the two countries.

In a message to President Traore after he returned home. President Ould Daddah spoke of the talks as having taken place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding. And Radio Mali reported that an indelible seal of brotherhood and understanding now marked the relations between the two countries.
