    PROTESTANT EXTREMISTS SHOUTED ABUSE AT ENGLAND'S ROMAN CATHOLIC LEADER, CARDINAL JOHN HEENAN, WHEN HE PREACHED IN THE ANGLICAN ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL IN LONDON TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY). AT LEAST SIX DEMONSTRATORS - SOME OF WHOM TRIED TO RAISE AN ANTI-PAPAL BANNER IN THE CATHEDRAL - WERE EVICTED BY USHERS AND POLICE.

    CARDINAL HEENAN WAS TAKING PART IN AN ECUMENICAL SERVICE TO MARK A WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY. WHEN THE CARDINAL, WHO IS ARCHBISHOP OF WESTMINSTER, ARRIVED AT THE CATHEDRAL, HE WAS MET BY MILITANT PROTESTANTS LED BY THE REVEREND IAN PAISLEY.

    POLICE HAD CORDONED OFF THE BANNER-CARRYING PROTESTORS, AND MR. PAISLEY HIMSELF WAS SURROUNDED BY AT LEAST 30 POLICE.

    MOST OF THE TROUBLE CAME INSIDE THE CATHEDRAL, WHERE DEMONSTRATORS HAD PLACED THEMSELVES STRATEGICALLY AMONG THE CONGREGATION. CARDINAL HEENAN STOOD FACING THE ALTAR, WITH THE ANGLICAN LEADER, DR. MICHAEL RAMSAY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, A FEW YARDS (METRES) TO HIS RIGHT.

    BEFORE THE SERVICE, COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS HURLED FRUIT AT MR. PAISLEY. AFTERWARDS, WHILE HE AND HIS CHANTING SUPPORTERS WAITED OUTSIDE THE FRONT ENTRANCE, CARDINAL HEENAN SLIPPED AWAY BY A SIDE DOOR.
