  • Description

ON JULY 31, FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE NIGHT, FINNISH POLICE USED TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE SEVERAL THOUSAND DEMONSTRATORS PROTESTING AGAINST THE WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL IN HELSINKI.

YOUNG MEN RAN AWAY DOWN THE STREET AS POLICE CLUBBED THE DEMONSTRATORS WITH HARD RUBBER TRUNCHEONS. AT LEAST TEN RIOTERS WERE ARRESTED.

STREET FIGHTING FIRST STARTED ON JULY 28, THE DAY BEFORE THE FESTIVAL OPENED. TWO-THOUSAND FINNISH STUDENTS MET A PROCESSION OF AERO-ASIATIC DELEGATES, WHO HAD BEEN PARADING ALL NIGHT THROUGH THE STREETS SINGING "PEACE" SONGS. THE STUDENTS COUNTERED WITH THEIR NATIONAL ANTHEM - AND THEN THE RIOTING STARTED.

THOUSANDS OF FOREIGN DELEGATES ARE TAKING PART IN THE FESTIVAL. THE LARGEST GROUP COMES FROM RUSSIA, EAST GERMANY AND ITALY, BUT THERE ARE ALSO BIG GROUPS FROM WEST GERMANY AND FRANCE, AND DELEGATES FROM THE UNITED STATES AND SWITZERLAND.
