  • Description

At the Kittikachorn Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday (8 May) the finals took place of the Sixth Asian Amateur Boxing Championships.

Thailand -- the home team -- took the team championship with five golds out of a possible eleven. Iran, the defending champions, finished second, winning two golds, as did the third placed team, South Korea. India and Indonesia gained the two other gold medals. The final points tally, was computed on the basis of the number of fighters, reaching the semi-finals and finals. Thailand scored 39 points; Iran -- 14 points and South Korea -- 13 points.

In the final of the featherweight division, defending champion Jaber Fail of Iran, outpointed Otsuka of Japan. The Japanese challenger boxed cleverly using left and right jabs, but Feali scored heavily in the second and third rounds with strong left/right combinations.

In the light-heavyweight division Orahol Wong Meung Chan of Thailand kept advancing in the face of a consistent attack of left and right uppercuts and left jabs from Mehttab Singh of India. But, despite his brave resistance, the Tahi boxer eventually lost on points.

In the heavyweight final, Iranian, Abdul Rezaandaueh, was initially forced to back away from the consistent attack of India's Mohd Aslam. But in the second and third rounds, Rezaandaueh came into his own, scoring with right jabs and drawing blood from the Indian. The ringside doctor examined Aslam on two occasions but let the fight continue. Eventually the Iranian was awarded a points victory over his blood-spattered opponent.
